Week in WRAP

Even though Noah and I have gotten a little behind on the GIG Alerts, so much has happened over the past month and we are very excited to share our stories...

To kick things off, Noah was approved to host his Eagle Scout Project at the Neighborhood House in Peoria this summer! He will be organizing a group of tutors to teach 21 students how to play the recorder. After four practice sessions in July, this group of students, in addition to their tutors, will be performing a concert open to the public. As his project plan continues to unfold, we will be sending out pictures and sharing stories. Also, when the concert time and location is confirmed, we will let everyone know! Noah and numerous other volunteers have put many many hours of time into this project and we cannot wait to see and hear about the lives it will impact!

If you have seen us out playing these past few Friday nights, you may have noticed our NEW lime green and blue RSQUARED t-shirts! Thanks to our two creative friends, Brandon and Tyler, this shirt was made possible. Brandon inspired the "lightning" design and Tyler brought his idea to life using graphic design. If you would like to be seen sporting this one of a kind shirt, please let us know! We will be selling them for 10.00$ each and any proceeds will be used for purchasing shirts in the future.

To keep this GIG alert from turning into a novel, we have one last story to share. The first Friday that we went to the Christian Center in May, we were expecting to play in the bowling alley. Upon walking into the room, we discovered that very few people like bowling during the summer! At first we did not know what to do, then I remembered the baseball game that was happening just up the hill. Because RSQAURED is random at times, we gathered our supplies and headed up to the game! After receiving the "okay" from the manager, we rocked out for the rest of the night! In the attached picture, you will see us at the baseball game with our NEW shirts! Everyone can spot us now :)

Week in WRAP

As the last few weeks of school draw to a close, Noah and I have had limited time to go out and play in the community. Even though we were studying this past Friday night, we still have an EXCITING saxogram story to share with you...

One night last April, Noah and I were rockin' out at the Christian Center and came across the Ewing family. We got to talking and discovered Mr. and Mrs. Ewing had a son and daughter who were attending EPCHS. We talked for at least an hour about who we were, RSQAURED stories and adventures, band, the impact of music in our lives, and how God has influenced our ministry.

This past week, Mrs. Ewing secretly contacted Noah and requested a birthday saxogram for her daughter Kristyn's surprise party. Noah and I can never pass up a saxogram opportunity, even on a school night! So on Thursday, April 26th, we loaded up the car, prepared our birthday supplies, and made headway for the Ewing residents! We parked a few streets down from their house then quietly tip-toed through a few yards until we reached their front porch. Mr. Ewing let us in the door and the rest is history! Please see the attached picture of Kristyn and her boyfriend Zach. We also included a picture of when Noah and I first walked into their kitchen...SURPRISE!

Have a SUPER fantastic week everyone!

Week in WRAP
RSQUARED had quite the weekend!

Friday evening, Noah and I got together with my cousin Anthony (a 5th grade band member) and attended the Jazz Cafe at CJHS. Before the Jazz Cafe, we had dinner together and discussed ideas for teaching recorder lessons. We have been given such a unique opportunity with Anthony! Although he is only in 5th grade, he has taken an immense interest in the recorder idea and wants to help. We are so excited to see how God will involve Anthony as our project continues to unfold.

Saturday evening, RSQUARED set a new saxogram record! We were invited to play for Terri Knobeloch's 50th birthday party at Alexander's Steak House. She had a total of 75 guests in attendance!!! The party started at 6:30PM, but I had to work from 10:30AM-7:00PM. Although Noah and I had limited time to prepare for this event, we planned to arrive RSQAURED style... That morning, I memorized happy birthday (yes I know we should have memorized it long ago). Then, while I was at work, Noah went out with his grandparents and bought a cupcake, sparkling candles, and a pink rose. After I got off work, I quickly changed into my suit and we made headway for Alexanders. Upon arrival, we prepared the cupcake, lit the candles, I put together my saxophone, placed the pink rose in the bell, and headed inside for the shindig! After seeing the pictures, I have a feeling this will be a birthday Terri never forgets :) Please see the attached photo!

And remember, if you ever want to make somebody's birthday one they will remember forever, send him/her an RSQAURED SAXOGRAM! ... for free :)

Week in WRAP
This past Christmas, RSQUARED delivered many Holiday Saxograms to people in our community. That Friday night in December, we were blessed to have played for a man named Bert Stiles. At the time, he was living in an assisted living home due to a brain tumor. Before his diagnosis, Bert was a church pastor and strong follower of Christ. We had the opportunity to play for him because our chauffeur that night, Steve Knobeloch, knew him personally and wanted to make a stop. This week, I had breakfast with Steve and one of the first things he said to me after I sat down was, "Tim, I need to show you something." He handed me a folded up piece of paper and on the front it read In Loving Memory.

I opened the Visitation Note and read inside that Bert Stiles had passed away. On the left hand side of the note, there was a hand-written message from Bert's mother. She wrote to us, explaining how much Bert appreciated us stopping by that night in December. At the time, Bert did not seem too excited that we were there, but from I was told, he was sharing with the world how he loved our music.

This was a powerful moment for Noah and I because we learned how a little music brightened the remaining days of this man's life. We know now that he is with God, singing and dancing to the music in Heaven. (Please see the attached picture of Bert, Noah, and I at the nursing home)

Week in WRAP

This week, it was time for RSQUARED to make some updates to our music library! Because we are always receiving song requests at the Christian Center, we made time to find some new tunes! Monday night, I met Noah and Brandon (a new RSQUARED volunteer) at the high school. Together, we went through old high school pep-band tunes and picked out our favorites. A few of our new songs include the Pink Panther, Jurassic Park, The Macarena (my favorite!), The Flintstones, and many more!  Now, we have all of these new songs, in addition to our current pep-band tunes. Our goal is to put together a binder with all of our music so we can take them on the road.

While picking through the music, we not only pulled out the tenor saxophone and bari saxophone parts, but also the clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and tuba parts. Last time we were at the Christian Center, we had a group called the Elite Ensemble play with us! During that gig, we were missing a few key parts such as the trumpet and trombone. Now, we are fully equipped to have the Elite Ensemble and many others join us!

Before the end of this e-mail, we need to give a shout out to our band director, Mr.Schneblin! He allowed us to peruse the band's music library for new songs, in addition to taking time out of his busy schedule on Friday to copy all of our music. Thanks to Mr.Schneblin and the EPCHS band, RSQUARED will be sharing new tunes with Central Illinois and beyond!

Have a SUPER FANTASTIC week everyone!

Exciting news...The recorders have ARRIVED!
This past week, Noah and I began our meticulous search for the perfect online recorder deal. We looked at website after website until finally coming across an organization called WestMusic. They have a wide selection of instruments online and give free shipping to anyone who purchases over 100 items. Noah and I knew this was the best website we had looked at thus far. Before placing an order, I thought to myself, maybe we should send an e-mail to this organization explaining who we are and our intentions with the recorders. After sending that e-mail Tuesday night, we anxiously awaited a reply. Thursday morning, I received an e-mailed from WestMusic and it read...

Dear Tim,

That's a great service that you're doing in the Peoria area and for St. Jude's Research Hospital!

We can offer you a discount on the one-piece Harmony soprano recorder #401172 so that each would be $1.58 instead of our advertised discounted $1.95 price.  If you order 100 or more, the shipping is free.

Noah and I were actually interested in a model one step above the one listed in the e-mail. This time, I called our WestMusic Associate (Kathy), and thanked her for helping us with our mission. I then asked if she would be able to lower the price for a recorder one step above the one she included in the e-mail. After a few calculations, Kathy said she could lower the listed price of $2.50 down to $2.02. Enthusiastically, I accepted the offer! I told Kathy I would keep her up to date on our adventures and again thanked her for WestMusic's kind donation.

After talking with Kathy, I was forwarded along to a sales associate (Melinda) and placed an order for 200 recorders. The next day, all 200 arrived!! (Check out the attached picture of what our recorders look like!)

This situation reminded us of the importance to ask and think "BIG"
