Pumpkin Carving

This past Friday marks the FIRST ever RSQAURED night of pumpkin carving. We kicked off the evening by taking our caravan of vehicles down to the Smith Farm in East Peoria. After picking out our pumpkins (ranging in all sizes from less than a pound to over 100 pounds!), we went to our friend Corrie Faye's house to begin carving. We are so blessed to have met the Fayes because they agreed to host all of us for the night. Now when I say host, that is an understatement...because of the rain, we had to carve inside and the Faye's let us take over their dining room, dining room table, and kitchen! They even made us freshly baked pumpkins seeds (so delicious!). Check out the attached picture of the group and our carved pumpkins!

Methodist Service League Christmas Gift Show
If you need plans for Saturday, November 3rd, come join RSQAURED from 9:00AM-2:00PM at the Methodist Atrium building in Peoria for the 62nd Annual Service League Gift Show! We will be playing Christmas tunes for the Service League vendors and shoppers to help kick-off the holiday season. There will be fresh homemade goods, handmade items (such as decorations, trinkets, and other neat stuff), clothing, and plenty of smiles to go around! We hope to see you there!

Light the Night
for Adrianna
RSQAURED's favorite time of the year is during the holidays. Last year was our first time hosting an event called Light the Night. Our mission for Light the Night is to find one person from our community and make it their very own SPECIAL night! Last year we honored Sophie Schneblin and helped her raise $250 for the Arthritis Foundation. This year, we will be hosting Light the Night in honor of Adrianna Brown. Adrianna is a second grader from East Peoria who has been diagnosed with ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia). She is a ST Jude patient and is still undergoing treatment.

Thanks to Evan and Jeff Hickerson, Light the Night will be hosted at the Mud Puddle Brick Oven on Friday, November 23rd from 5:00PM-8:30PM. We are still in the planning process, but we do know the night will be full of delicious pizza hot from the brick oven, dozens and dozens of delectable cookies, live Christmas music (bands a singers will be announced soon), and a visit from Santa Claus!
We want this to be an evening where Adrianna can forget about leukemia, the hospital, doctors, nurses, and medicine. Instead, she will feel surrounded by a community of people who love, care, and support her! The more people we have attend, the more people there will be to help us Light the Night for Adrianna and make this an evening she will truly remember for a lifetime.

How can you get involved??
Simple...we are opening the invitation up to everyone and need your help to spread the word! This week, I attached our flyer for the event. On the flyer is Adrianna's picture and information about Light the Night. We invite you to print out the flyer and share it with everyone (friends, family, co-workers, classmates)! Any questions, comments, or ideas please let us know!

School, high school football games, band competitions, have all been keeping RSQAURED quite busy these past few weeks! Although we have been busy, our group found a day to visit the Peoria Heights Tower Park. In addition, RSQAURED's favorite time of the year is approaching, the holiday season, and we have already started planning a few exciting events!

To begin with Tower Park, on Friday September 28th, we journeyed to Peoria Heights for an awesome view, frozen yogurt from Sweet Cece's, and some amazing fellowship time. As a group, we went up the Heights Tower which stands 200 feet above ground! We had a breathtaking view of Peoria and front row seats to the best sunset in town. Please see the attached picture of our group (the sky background is beautiful!). A night with RSQAURED is never complete without some "form" of ice-cream, so we topped off the evening with Sweet Cece's Frozen Yogurt...Mmmmm!

As I said, RSQAURED's favorite time of the year is during the holidays. Last year was our first time hosting an event called Light the Night. I hope everyone has a super, SUPER fantastic week!

Week in WRAP
Welcome to September!!! After a visit from Hurricane Isaac, I know everyone is ready for a beautiful Labor Day. In our last GIG Alert, I was going on and on about new records that RSQAURED was breaking, well it happened again! This is how last Friday began...

So Noah calls me and says he has a group of students ready to go for Friday night. We agreed to all meet at the high school at 6:30 that evening. I was thinking to myself...okay we have a hurricane coming into town, the weather is going to be rainy, I will be surprised if we have anyone show. As I pulled up to the high school, I was turning left at the stop light and saw out of the corner of my eye a mob of green t-shirts. Yes, I said a mob! There were 13 students ready to go to the Christian Center! On top of that, five more met us at the Christian Center, making a new record of 18 people!!! Then, when we arrived at Culvers, I had hopes of filling up a corner booth for another group photo, but there was no way we would fit. This time, we had to put together five tables in order to take a group picture (yes, I said five tables)! Please check out the attached picture of us at Culvers. One of our friends posted this picture on their Facebook page along with the following quote,

"And friends are friends forever, if the Lord's the Lord of them. And a friend will not say never, cause the welcome will not end. Though it's hard to let you go, in the Father's hands we know. That a lifetime's not too long, to live as friends." -Michael W. Smith

God continues to bless this group every week. There are so many other things these high school students could be doing with their Friday nights, but they choose to come together as a family of friends. I am so thankful for them, their parents for letting them go with us, and most importantly God who continues to bless us with so many awesome individuals.

We will not be going out this Friday night due to a high school foot-ball game, but you are welcome to come out and support the Marching Raiders! Having a so GOOD you can HARDLY stand it week everyone!

RSQAURED had one jam packed weekend!!! We broke three records between Friday and Saturday. To kick things off Friday evening, we broke our first record before even arriving at the Christian Center by having 10 people total in our group. One of our newest members, Nick Emert, was able to bring along his drum set which broke our second record! RSQAURED has never taken a drum set to the Christian Center. We rocked out there for about an hour, then noticed a birthday gathering in the back room. RSQAURED can never, ever pass up a birthday opportunity so we made headway for the back room. We played Happy Birthday, Lets Get it Started, and finished things off with the Hey Song (One of our favorites because the audience can clap AND sing along)! After playing, we brought the birthday girl, Madison, her very own recorder and recorder book. Check out the attached picture of us with Madison and her friends!

After the Christian Center, we always go to Culver's for dinner and ice-cream. This was my first time witnessing RSQAURED take up all three registers at Culver's :) Usually the RSQAURED fun ends Friday night, but with this group we kept things going through Saturday morning! We had a group of 11 (Yes, another record has been broken!) meet at the East Peoria bike trail. We then rode as a group to Morton, had some delectable donuts, then headed back to East Peoria. We are so blessed to have such an amazing group of friends! Please see the attached picture of us at Morton with our biking gear!

RSQAURED will not be playing this Friday, but the majority of our group will be at the Friday night football game in East Peoria either playing in the band or watching from the stands. If you would like to join us in the stands, please let us know! Until then, have a SUPER fantastic week everyone!

What a busy summer it has been! (and warm too!) It is crazy to think that in less than a week our concert with the students at the Neighborhood House will be taking place...feels like just last week we were starting spring and now the last full week in July has arrived!

Concert Details:
The concert will be taking place THIS Friday at the Neighborhood House starting at 3:00PM and will be completed before 5:00PM. Fresh Eyesals coffee will be available along with fine cuisines made by our very own Chef Masal Uno. The students and tutors have been hard at work during our rehearsals on Friday. I love watching how they continue to improve each week and cannot wait to see the impact this concert will have on their musical careers.

This is event is free and open to the public so we want to invite all of our friends and family! If you have any questions, please let us know!

The time has finally arrived! After 7 months of hard work and preparation, Noah's Eagle Scout Project kicked off last Friday morning! The main idea of his project is to teach kids at the Neighborhood House how to play the recorder. His project will take place every Friday morning in July and then on July 27th, we will host a concert at the Neighborhood House which is open to the community. This past Friday, we had 12 students participate ranging in ages from 6 to 12. The five tutors were able to run small group practice sessions, and then at the end we had a full-band rehearsal. Please see the attached picture of our tutors in action!!!

If you are interested in helping, please join us at the Neighborhood House! We ask that any volunteers arrive at 8:45AM and the practice session will end at 10:00AM.

One more thing, back in March of this year I sent out a GIG-Alert about our two friends Raven and Ivy. These two girls were the ones who inspired us to play in the bowling alley at the Christian Center. In March, they had to move to Texas with their family. This week, Noah and I sent down three of our RSQAURED t-shirts for them to wear. We told them that if they wear their shirt on Fridays in Texas, we will ALSO be wearing our shirts in Illinois! This past Friday, I was surprised to find four very green pictures posted on my Facebook wall from Texas! Check out the attached picture of RSQAURED in Texas!

Happy July!! I hope everyone has been keeping cool with these warm summer temperatures. I know of one lady who has certainly been keeping her cool, Mary Jane Dowling. This past Friday, she had her retirement party at Weaver Ridge Golf Course. Mary Jane taught at Methodist College in Peoria and before she retired, she was working as a student recruiter. In fact, after meeting Mary Jane during a high school college visit, she is one of the reasons I chose to attend Methodist. Ever since I started at Methodist, she has inspired me to go above and beyond in everything I do. For example, last Fall she asked me to join her to represent Methodist College on WHOI "Good Company." That is why you may hear some people refer to us as Mr. and Mrs. Hollywood :)

When Mary Jane told me about her retirement gathering, I knew I had to do something special. Because the party was on a Friday night, my decision was made easy, bring RSQAURED! So that night, Brandon, Noah, and I gathered our equipment and headed for Weaver Ridge. We surprised Mary Jane with our lime green shirts and flowers, then energized the night with a few pep-band tunes! I hope we helped make this an unforgettable evening for Mary Jane, just as she has made an unforgettable impact on our lives.

Please see the attached picture of us from Friday night.
